9 Things on your Fall To-Do List
Fall is here! It’s time to clean up and prepare for the cold months ahead. While you’re working around the home, Bomberger’s is ready to serve your Home & Hardware needs to make fall cleanup less of a chore. Need a place to start? Follow our Fall cleanup to-do list and get ahead before the weather gets too cold.
1. Clean Downspouts and Gutters
Dried falling leaves can really disrupt the drainage of your downspouts and gutters. Rinse your gutters and undo any clogs to avoid potential water damage to your home’s walls, basement, and foundation.
2. Wash Siding and Windows
It’s natural for dirt and grime to accumulate over time making your home’s outer appearance look less than stellar. Some cleaning solution and a soft-bristled brush is all you’ll need to revive your siding. Need a little more power? Stop in and ask about our rental power washers.
3. Install Storm Windows
Remove Window Screens and Install Storm Windows. Broken glass? We can help. Visit our Hardware desk for assistance with repairing broken glass. We can repair any broken screens while they’re out too.
4. Clean Fireplace / Inspect Chimney
The build-up of soot and debris in your fireplace can present a fire hazard if left unclean. It’s a good idea to clean your fireplace to prevent dangerous build-up. While the weather is fair, it is also a good time to inspect the structure of your chimney for loose bricks, cracks, and missing mortar.
5. Winterize Outdoor Spigot
It’s important to drain any trapped water from your home’s outdoor spigots. Ice can cause major damage to your home’s plumbing. Be sure to disconnect any water hoses you may have connected to spigots and shut the water valve. Protect your spigot from the coming cold temps with a Frost Protector and wrap any exposed pipes with insulation tubes.
6. Leaf Cleanup
Raking and cleaning up leaves feels like a never-ending job this time of year. If you want to forego the rake, try mowing over the dead leaves several times to mulch the grass with the chopped dried leaves, creating a richer soil for the spring. For large shade trees that produce too many leaves, ask about our Billy Goat Leaf Vac available for rental.
7. Cut Back Tree Limbs
Inspect your tree canopy once all the leaves fall. Identify any dead, dying, or diseased branches and prune accordingly. Make the job easier with a durable chainsaw from Husqvarna or Echo from Bomberger’s.
8. Store your Lawn & Garden Equipment
Now is the time to clean and store your tools and power equipment that will go unused over winter. Give them a good inspection and make any necessary repairs. Our team of skilled service techs is here to help keep your power equipment in great shape. If you’re handy with a wrench, we also offer the parts you need for DIY repairs. Shop our parts online or stop in-store. We’re happy to help.
9. Store or Cover Your Patio Furniture
Before storing or covering your patio furniture, clean with a mild soap and water solution. Prolong the life of your patio furniture by properly covering or safely storing for use in the spring.
